What does their functionality look like today? What can they do? What do developers still need to work on? Welcome to an article about antivirus software.
In today’s market there are many manufacturers of this type of software. In a way it is caused by the number of threats, which are increasing from one day to the next. In order to earn money, we are flooded with information, statistics and analyses, just to force us to buy antivirus software.
So buying a computer today is not just hardware. We also have to remember about the monthly fees. After all, we do not want to buy a computer that will not have access to the Internet.
And when we take care of it, we must immediately protect ourselves against the threats that await us, i.e. equip ourselves with antivirus software.
Yes, there are many free alternatives, but each sponsored article will write that these are ineffective tools that only occupy our hardware resources. Commercial products provide us with a guarantee of their effectiveness. For only 100 PLN a year we will get so many bytes that even the best hacker will not enter our system. Anti-virus software is presented as a maintenance-free and mandatory tool. Automatic updates ensure that we are always protected against the latest threats. Definitions of virus signatures, as it is called, are code samples, which are compared with each scanned file.
If a piece of code matches the definition, the file is treated as a threat. Unfortunately, the truth is that it doesn’t always work. There are a lot of new viruses on the Internet. Often without human analysis it is impossible to define and build a proper definition. Many IT portals and security experts claim that manufacturers are rarely able to update their databases.
When one is analyzed, in the meantime several hundred new varieties will emerge, which will not be detected and identified until a new definition is created. The conclusion is therefore simple. Fighting viruses is like fighting windmills. It becomes effective until we come across a serious threat.
Antiviruses like the modern driver
I compare a computer with antivirus software with the driver of a modern car. Many people think that the more driving assistance mechanisms they have, the less you have to think and be careful on the road.
This is also the case in computer science. The presence of security software does not relieve us from thinking. Unfortunately, many people act in this way. That is why in companies such tools are necessary.
Especially when we have sensitive data and employee awareness is very low. When installing an antivirus on a workstation, the administrator is not exempt from the obligation to control the flow of data and activity. This type of program is only a tool to facilitate it.
The future stands on the side of malware
Towards the availability of new threats and their vaccines will be rather worse and worse. It was already loud about many encrypted computers by ransomware, which has become a new form of attack.
The world of malware is still evolving, and I have the impression that manufacturers are focusing on less important things. Firewall bytes, HIPS systems, cloud computing, trust assessment, spam filters, HTTP scanners, WiFi scanning, game mode, presentation mode and so on.
These things are often an element of marketing that is supposed to induce us to buy antivirus software. Unnecessary waterworks and gadgets are putting more and more strain on your computer. Especially when it comes to HDDs, which in today’s antiviruses simply do not make it, generating high latency.
Do we still need antivirus software?
In my opinion, yes, but only in two cases. The first one is companies. Workstations and computers store a lot of sensitive data. In addition, they are often operated by unconscious users.
Administrators are not able to ensure full monitoring of everything that happens on the network and fly every time a report is made. This partial role is taken over by security tools such as antivirus. And here they perform their function very well.
The second case is more influenced by the market and producers of this software. Unaware, home users who are not too interested in new technologies will always choose the simplest and shortest way.
On the other hand, IT specialists have something to do, because there will be more and more computers.
The remaining group, to which I also belong, will be where there is no place to give up antiviruses. This is not because we are more aware of the threats coming from the Internet or we know how to protect against them. We are simply more and more annoyed by the fall in hardware performance and the lack of free resources that we need. Sometimes it is better to follow certain rules and scan the system manually until then.
There is no effective cure for certain threats, such as ransomware. If you want to prevent data encryption, you should first of all back up your data. Save it on a separate medium and remember to update it once a month. Try to keep your files in several places. I, for example, keep music and books in electronic form on my computer, tablet and smartphone.
Failure of any device will not result in a complete loss of data, as it will be easy to copy them from another device. I’m also a big fan of my own clouds in the form of NAS servers and so on. Now every good router has USB 3.0 and allows you to connect the drive. While storing data in a private warehouse, we care about privacy and regular archiving.
